Helium procurement entered a more fragile phase in 2026. Qatar's associated helium output was interrupted alongside natural-gas processing, Russian exports became subject to a special authorization procedure, and China imposed a temporary export ban to protect domestic supply. These developments affect different parts of the chain, but together they reward earlier qualification and multi-route planning.
Secure the operating requirement before comparing offers: product form, purity, packaging, approved source, route, usable quantity on arrival and documentation. A nominal unit price does not capture replacement cost when the original route is unavailable.
1. Qatar: output interruption and constrained Gulf logistics
In March, disruptions to Qatar's natural-gas processing halted LNG-linked helium output and exposed how much global supply depends on a small number of integrated facilities. Reuters reported that helium spot prices had doubled after the crisis began, while another market observer cited in the same report saw early indications of approximately 50% increases. The difference illustrates how spot pricing varies by buyer, timing, packaging and route.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faced serious restriction and disruption. We do not describe the strait as fully closed: operational access, carrier decisions and risk controls can change independently and must be checked for each movement.

2. Russia: export authorization and operational exposure
On 14 April, Russia introduced a temporary authorization procedure for helium exports outside the Eurasian Economic Union. Reuters reported that the measure is intended to support stable domestic supply and is scheduled to remain in force through the end of 2027. For an international buyer, the immediate implication is administrative and timing risk rather than an automatic prohibition on every shipment.
On 24 June, AP reported a strike on the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, part of a complex that includes a helium plant. AP also stated that the reported effects could not then be independently verified. This is evidence of operational exposure, not a basis for us to quantify lost helium output.
Repeated disruptions across Russian refining and fuel infrastructure have also contributed to fuel availability pressure. For helium logistics, that matters because long overland routes depend on vehicle availability, predictable refuelling and controlled transit time. It does not, by itself, prove a specific helium production loss.

3. China: temporary export ban
China's temporary helium export ban took effect on 10 July. At a 16 July press conference, the Ministry of Commerce said China is a major helium importer and that the measure was adopted to ensure domestic supply. The ministry also said the policy would be adjusted as domestic and international supply-and-demand conditions change.
For buyers outside China, the measure removes the assumption that a Chinese resale or re-export route will remain available. Existing enquiries should be checked against customs classification, origin, contract status and the current policy position.

4. Capacity headlines require careful separation
New capacity can help the market only when the relevant production train, purification system, liquefaction equipment, containers and export route are all operating. Public announcements about construction, equipment sales or commissioning targets should not be treated as delivered merchant helium.
Gazprom's public record states that two helium units at the Amur Gas Processing Plant reached full design capacity in 2023. We found no primary public source supporting a separate March 2026 "launch" and therefore do not present one as fact.
A fire occurred on 25 August at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex, a SIBUR-Sinopec petrochemical project. This is not the helium-producing Amur Gas Processing Plant operated by Gazprom. Public reporting did not establish damage to helium lines or a reduction in helium output, so the event is relevant only as broader regional infrastructure and commissioning risk.

5. Russian domestic exchange indicators moved higher
The following SPIMEX observations are a Russian domestic exchange indicator, not a global helium benchmark. They are two observed points and should not be used alone to prove why prices changed.

What procurement teams can do now
- Qualify more than one source and more than one feasible transport route.
- Confirm whether the requirement is liquid litres, kilograms or gaseous cubic metres, and define the conversion basis.
- Include container availability, expected transit time and route-specific boil-off in the commercial comparison.
- Validate end-use, export-control and document requirements before reserving product.
- Separate confirmed production from planned capacity and equipment announcements.
